Wardrobe stylist Brian Swan
I spoke to one of Arizona's most respected stylists; Brian Swan and we talked about how he began his styling career, some tips on dressing up, and how he also felt about last weeks event at the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) for Fashion Rocks MIM with Phoenix Fashion Week. To know more about his services visit his website: http://www.rhmstyle.com/
1. How did you get into styling?
I actually just paid my way personally, fashion was something I've always been interested in. When I started at a younger age in high school, I was always into tailoring clothes, and also went to a couple classes on how to make clothes. My friends would always ask me "Where did you get your clothes from or where can I find this?" and it kind of evolved into styling and now here I am later.
2. How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style is not a specific type, I try to be very versatile when it comes to style because it's a way of non verbal communication. It's like your talking about yourself without having to say anything. One day I'll have a bow tie, and the next I will have a t-shirt, or some other day I'll have on a Fedora or paperboy hat. It always varies, I never want to wear the same thing.
That was really exciting because I've been wanting to work with Phoenix Fashion Week for a very long time and we've finally had the chance to get things together and make things happen. Just to be able to call all the shots as a stylist which we don't always get to do, that was really cool! Also being able to say, you know I need this kind of music or just the whole thing was under our control. Everything was just great.
4. When styling someone, what is the most important part of an overall look?
The most important thing, when it comes to just styling someone, is how it fits their body. The thing about is that you can have the accessories or the shoes but if the clothing don't fit your body the way it should then it'll look ridiculous.
I started the company about 2-3 years ago. I've always been into fashion and I didn't really want to work for anybody else. I've always had that entrepreneur spirit, but I've never really had the chance to put it down on paper. I decided to contacted one of my friends and we were just throwing ideas back n' forth so it kept building bigger and bigger. Eventually he couldn't be part of it because he had to go and it was something I really wanted to do. I noticed there was no firm in the valley for that and that's how it evolved into what it is today.
6. What are your favorite styling tips for both men and women?
Well the first one for both men and women is making sure that you don't wear pieces that you already have. People tend to like that same look or something specific. For men, I would definitely say to stop being so copycattish. They should be like, "This is me and this is what I want to show people". As for the women I would say wear something that fits your body. It's important that you dress for yourself at the end of the day.
I look at a lot of different people when it comes to style, and it's kind of hard to say who an icon is right now because people at the end of the day have their very style. Someone I always look forward to see is B.O.B, he has a very unique style. It's not too artistic you know, but he is very versatile. He wears bow ties, camouflage, skater shorts, he normally does it all. Of course I also like other people like Kanye, Justin Timberlake, etc.
8. What advice do you have for any aspiring stylists out there?
I think the biggest thing they have to understand is they've got to start somewhere in fashion. I started working at different department stores, doing the visual merchandising, ordering for the stores, learning how to work with people when they come into the store. I would say start by working at a store is the best way because you will get experienced in a lot of different areas. You'll understand how the business work, how to treat people, how to fit things, how to put clothes on the manican, so it's really useful in that kind of arena.
