Floatel Jupiter was a residential oil platform. It's currently falling over and being submerged into the Mexican Gulf Ocean. Approximately 700 people onboard were safely evacuated. Pemex reports that 2075 barrels of diesel fuel were stored in the pontoons, and 82 barrels of fuel were stored in on deck.
Classified as a Technological Disaster by RSOE EDIS more information will follow.
PERMEX EVENT REPORT (PDF FILE)
According to a very rough translation of the Pemex presentation, a control valve problem in the port pontoon of the Jupiter semi-submersible platform allowed an influx of water. Apparently, the pumping system was not sufficient to control the inflow.
The flotel platform is the property of Cotemar, S.A., and was contracted by Pemex to provide personnel lodging services. The platform was located 80 km from Ciudad del Carmen. The water depth is only 38m, so some of the platform remains above the water surface. The flotel was moored at the site with 8 anchors.
